Conference Memories

It has been a month since we all gathered for the annual ELT Forum Conference at the University of Economics in Bratislava. This was the first year that SCET/SKA – The Slovak Chamber of English Teachers was the primary organiser and we sincerely hope you not only had a good time, but learned something useful for your teaching.

Nevertheless, we are aware that it is impossible to attend all the sessions due to our restricted schedule. That is why we have asked the speakers to send us their materials (i.e. notes, presentations, etc.) so that you can have a look at what you liked/missed and thus benefit from the conference in the long run. Agnieszka Kruszyńska 


Agnieszka Kruszyńska is a graduate of Primary Education with Early English Teaching, Warsaw University. After six years of working in language schools, she began her adventure with bilingual education as a lower primary tutor at Colegio Internacional Torrequebrada in Benalmádena, and is currently working in a bilingual kindergarten and primary school in Warsaw, Poland.




Agnieszka’s presentation: Creating Young Leaders and Team Workers


Being a team worker and a leader are crucial qualities nowadays. Can we develop them as early as in 6-year-old kids? Being able to find, select and share information is an essential skill for learning and, even existing in the modern world. Are we capable of providing little kids with those tools? For me, the answer is yes.

Beatrix Price


Beatrix Price is a teacher at the British Council Budapest, Young Learner Specialist, Teacher trainer and the Vice-President and the international network coordinator of IATEFL-Hungary. She teaches young learners at the British Council, she is an online English teacher for Katedra Language School Budapest and works at a primary school in Gödöllő. Bea’s interests include holistic education, using art in foreign language teaching, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, language teaching methodology and child and teacher development. She has recently given workshops on Jane Austen’s world in the light of the 21st century both in Hungary and abroad.


Beatrix’s presentation: Songs, rhymes and games in the YL class  


Young learners enjoy doing movement accompanied activities in the language lessons. They enter into the mood of the language through movement and understanding, melody and rhythm. Games are introduced that represent this positive motivation for them; they serve the child’s healthy development through joy, delight and enjoyment and support flexible, mobile thinking. We will explore the advantages of using games, songs and rhymes; the variety of the range of learning situations; maintaining pupils’ motivation with the pace of the lesson; ‘hidden’ practice of language patterns; giving confidence by encouraging pupil participation and providing fluency practice.

Federico Espinosa


Federico Espinosa has been an English teacher since 2008, having taught in a variety of contexts from sub-Saharan African secondary schools to New York City Language Schools, French Universities and most recently at AKCENT International House in Prague. He has been actively involved in ELT conferences in Europe for the last four years, having served on the TESOL France Executive Committee as the founding regional coordinator of TESOL France Bordeaux, and spoken at TESOL France and TESOL Greece. When not teaching Federico plays the horn with the Orchestr Univerzity Karlovy v Praze and rides his bike around Prague.



Federico’s presentation: The Necessity of Needs Analyses


A famous proverb warns against not “seeing the forest for the trees”, or missing the bigger picture by getting hung up on the details. This workshop encourages the complete opposite, looking carefully at the trees in our forests – the students in our classes. We will discuss learner differences and work through a variety of fun and communicative needs analysis techniques that involve and engage learners in their own learning; encouraging both motivation and learner autonomy. Participants will leave with a practical set of activities to effectively determine and adapt to student needs.

Zuzana Hardoš Kurnasová


Zuzana is currently the head of English Department at CS Lewis Bilingual High School and has been teaching Global Studies for 3 years. She holds an MA degree in International Relations from Central European University in Budapest. Email:


Zuzana’s presentation: We are the World – Even at School  


Umpteenth year, motivating students to discuss their “ideal job” just feels like bad karma, doesn’t it?
Global Studies themed activities help students learn English in an interactive and fun way, and stimulate their curiosity. Students learn to find connections between seemingly unrelated issues and thus see the world in a more complex way. Based on 9 years of teaching Global Studies at CS Lewis Bilingual High School, I would like to share with you some of the practices and resources we have used in our classes and show you how you can use them in your regular English class.
